My 5 Best Remedies for Being Sick

I’ve been feeling under the weather today, probably due to fatigue from this weekend at Austin City Limits. So, I’ve decided to make a list. These are my 5 best remedies for being sick. These things go for anything like the flu, fever, sore throats or just general sickness.

  1. Sleep- This one is obvious but some people still neglect it. “Eh, I’m only a little sick. I don’t need to sleep more.” Maybe so, but you’ll recover faster so just do it.

  2. Ginger Ale/7-Up/Sprite- This is an old tale that ginger helps sooth the stomach and balance out. However, I’m only suggesting these sugary drinks because the sweet “carbonationy” bubbles can feel nice on the throat. While it’s not actually going to heal you, I’ve found that these drinks do seem to comfort me in small doses.

  3. Hot Soup – It’s a classic soother/comfort care food. Get some fluids in you and some food. Its easy to eat, its warm, and it’s delicious if you eat a good one. I usually favor the chicken noodle but New England clam chowder and Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese are good go-to’s as well.

  4. Cough Drops- Even if you don’t have a sore throat, these can make you feel better. The menthol soothes your air and breath. You can sleep and feel comfortable more easily while also occupying yourself with some candy and distracting yourself from how today isn’t going to be your favorite.

  5. Reading/Writing – Now this one only goes if you don’t need to sleep and have the energy to do it. Sometimes when your sick, you’re awake but don’t feel like being active. Luckily, reading and writing (read: typing in 2016) require very little physical energy and both can be done laying down. If the boredom of being sick is killing you, try to start reading or writing. The activity can take you mind away and distract you for periods of a time if you get into a groove.

So there you go, these are my 5 best remedies for being sick. If you’ve never tried one of these, do it next time and see if it works for you.
